Feb 7, 2010, FISH OILS FOR YOUTHFULNESS?

Is there no end to the benefits of fish oils? The DAILY MAIL appears to be of that opinion! Peta Bee recently wrote on their GOOD HEALTH pages:

'Last week researchers from the University of California suggested omega-3s - whether from supplements or fish - helped cells in the body live longer.

When they studied heart disease patients, they found the more omega-3 the subjects ate, the slower the damage to the DNA in their cells.

That, in turn, meant better protection against inflammation and the ageing process.

So will fish oils help you live longer - and look younger?

Heather Yuregir, a researcher at the British Nutrition Foundation, says it's possible, although more evidence is needed to confirm the anti-ageing effect.

"The study found fish oils may protect against ageing, which does indicate another possible benefit of consuming such oils in the diet.

But it must be remembered that it is only one study; the claims need to be strengthened."'

Jan 30, 2010, FISH OILS - BRAIN FOOD?

Another feature in the DAILY MAIL had this to say:

'There has been great interest in the fish oil effect on the brain - both in preventing disease and boosting brain power.

Studies have shown, for instance, that DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) can reduce the formation of plaques in the brain; these have been linked to Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Too little omega-3 has been linked to mild depression, and there is some evidence that fish oils may help here.

DHA has been shown to boost foetal brain development.

However, parents who feed their children fish oil supplements before exams might be wasting their money, as the evidence for fish oils boosting intelligence and exam performance is tenuous.'

Jan 29, 2010, FISH OILS & MACULAR DEGENERATION

Here's more from the DAILY MAIL this week about the multi-benefits of fish oils:

'Eating oily fish once a week has been shown to protect against age-related macular degeneration, the most common cause of blindness in the older generation.

They might also be helpful in the fight against some forms of cancer.

Last year, Professor John Witte, from the University of California, suggested a high intake of omega-3s reduced men's risk of prostate cancer by about 60%. There is some evidence, too, that a regular consumption of omega-3s can help prevent bowel cancer.'

Jan 27, 2010, WILL FISH OILS PROTECT YOUR HEART?

Here's an interesting snippet from yesterday's GOOD HEALTH pages of the DAILY MAIL:

'There have been a number of studies suggesting fish oils boost heart health, but the most compelling evidence was a study last year published in the Journal Of The American College Of Cardiology.

Led by Dr Carl Lavie of the Ochsner Cardiology Clinic in Louisiana, the study showed Omega-3 oils help to prevent blood clotting and regulate or lower blood pressure.

The strongest heart-protective effect is for patients with established cardiovascular disease, the study found. "This isn't just hype - we now have tremendous and compelling evidence from very large studies, some dating back 20 and 30 years," Dr Lavie said.

Under guidelines issued by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), doctors are encouraged to prescribe supplements to patients after they have had a heart attack to prevent repeat attacks.'

Jan 26, 2010, PSORIASIS, ECZEMA & FISH OILS

Today's DAILY MAIL states:

'If you suffer from psoriasis or eczema, take fish oil supplements. Studies have found they have an anti-inflammatory effect, helping prevent the skin becoming more red and irritated.'

Jan 20, 2010, IS FISH OIL THE ELIXIR OF LIFE?

Today's DAILY MAIL states:

'The wide-ranging health benefits of fish oils are firmly established. Doctors are encouraged to prescribe supplements to patients after a heart attack or if they have high levels of an unhealthy type of fat in their blood.

The omega-3 fatty acids in them reduce cholesterol in the blood, as well as preventing clots and blocking dangerous heart rhythms. Other studies suggest fish oil can protect against both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease, prevent deterioration of eyesight, reduce depression and treat schizophrenia.'

Jan 12, 2010, BALANCE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR WITH CINNAMON

Extract from expert nutritionist Patrick Holford's YOUR 2010 COMMANDMENTS:

'To balance your blood sugar, eat fewer fast-release foods (sweets, cakes and biscuits) and more slow-release foods (fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrain carbohydrates). You also need to graze rather than gorge. Eat breakfast, lunch and supper - and introduce mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. This provides your body with an even supply of fuel.

Another tip is a daily spoonful of cinnamon. A Scandinavian study found that 6g of cinnamon - about 2 teaspoons - may slow down digestion in the stomach. This would effectively 'slow-release' the carbohydrates in a meal.'

Jan 11, 2010, BENEFITS OF GINKGO BILOBA

The IRISH DAILY MAIL recently stated:

'The ginkgo plant contains unique substances called ginkgolides which appear to prevent blood vessels constricting, increase blood flow and reduce blood clotting ability.

Other benefits may lie in ginkgo's anti-oxidant activity, reducing the level of harmful chemicals in the body.

Laboratory research last year found the plant may help stave off the damage caused by a stroke.

Ginkgo biloba is extracted from the leaves of the ginkgo - the world's oldest living tree - which was left only in China after the Ice Age.

It is particularly popular in Germany and France.'

Jan 10, 2010, FISH OILS (CAPSULES) - & WEIGHT LOSS

Here's an interesting extract from THE METABOLISM MIRACLE by Diane Kress in a recent DAILY MAIL issue:

'Fish oil or omega-3 fatty acids help to reduce the chance of coronary vascular disease by decreasing fats in the blood, helping to lower blood pressure, decreasing the growth of plaque on the walls of the arteries and helping to thin the blood.

A link between fish oils and weight loss has long been suspected - but has still to be confirmed by scientists. However, in one recent Australian study overweight people who carried on eating as normal but exercised regularly and took a fish oil supplement lost as much as 4.5lb in 3 weeks. The weight loss experienced by those who had followed the same regime but had not taken a supplement was negligible.

I recommend 1,200mg per day for heart healthy people and 2,400mg per day for anyone with heart disease. It's also a good idea to eat fatty fish, such as sardines, mackerel and salmon, twice a week.'

Jan 9, 2010, GARLIC FOR CIRCULATION

Anastasia Stephens wrote in a recent issue of the IRISH DAILY MAIL:

'Acting in a similar way to aspirin, garlic boosts circulation by thinning the blood and preserving the elasticity of arteries and capillaries.

A study at the University of Saarland in Germany found that 800mg of garlic powder - the equivalent of half a garlic clove taken each day for a month - increased microcirculation in capillaries and arteries beneath the skin by 47.6%.'

Jan 8, 2010, BENEFITS OF GINKGO BILOBA

From recent edition of the IRISH DAILY MAIL:

Extracts from the ginkgo biloba tree have been found to enhance circulation to the hands, feet and brain. It's also rich in molecules called flavonoids, which protect blood vessels from damage and help improve memory.

'In one trial in which people took ginkgo extract every day, researchers found blood flow to hands and feet increased by 57% in just one hour', says Dr Brewer. Research at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, found that when sufferers of Raynaud's Disease (in which blood flow to extremities is severely disrupted by the cold) took ginkgo biloba extract every day for ten weeks, attacks of numbness and pain to the hands and feet fell by 56%.

Jan 7, 2010, ALOE FOR A HANGOVER

In a recent IRISH DAILY MAIL Dr Rob Galloway stated that the reason alcohol can make you ill with a hangover is 'because it irritates your gut - by damaging the lining of your stomach and increasing acid production - gives you diarrhoea, lowers your blood sugar levels, interferes with sleep and makes you pass more urine, so you become dehydrated.

Several stars were then asked how they beat their hangovers. Rock singer Chris Rea's solution is a crumpet with some fresh cream, smoked salmon and a fresh fried egg on top, garnished with olive oil!

Domestic Goddess Nigella Lawson favors a mixture of Spatone (sachet of iron) and a Berocca (fizzy vitamin tablet), to which she adds Solpadeine if necessary.

Personally, I find a glass of Aloe Vera Gel works better than anything else!

Jan 6, 2010, ESSENTIAL FATS

Here's a quote from leading nutritionist Patrick Holford:

'Thirty years ago 'fat' was a demon: high in calories, bad for your heart and the cause of weight gain. Today we know that omega-3 fats are essential for good health, acting as natural painkillers and more potent antidepressants than conventional drugs. On top of this they are your skin's best friend, keeping it soft and moisturised.

Omega-3 fats are found in colder climate nut or seed oils, such as flaxseeds and walnuts. They are also found in oily fish. The decline in our oily fish consumption, largely because of fat phobia, has fuelled an epidemic of omega-3 deficiency.

In my survey, I found that a person's chances of being in optimal health go up by nearly two thirds for those consuming three or more servings of oily fish (herrings, sardines, mackerel, salmon, tuna and trout) a week, compared to two a week.'

Dec 16, 2009, GARLIC & WARTS

Yesterday's DAILY MAIL states:

'Garlic could be a fast-acting treatment for warts. A U.S. study has found that a rub-on extract of the spice removed all trace of warts within two weeks.

It's thought sulphur compounds in garlic have antibiotic and anti-viral benefits.

Warts are caused by a viral infection in the skin's top layer. Though harmless, they are highly contagious.

In the study, 23 people applied the oily garlic extract twice a day. After one to two weeks, all were wart-free, though side-effects included redness and burning.

Traditional wart remedies include a compress of freshly crushed garlic over the area at night (though this carries the risk of the same side effects as the oil)'.

Dec 8, 2009, FISH OILS & NECK PAIN

Under the heading COULD FISH OIL PILLS RELIEVE NECK PAIN? today's DAILY MAIL states:

'Fish oil supplements could relieve neck pain - and may be an alternative to over-the-counter anti-inflammatories.

Anti-inflammatory drugs can be very effective, but they carry the risk of complications with long-term use, including gastric ulcers.

In a new U.S. study, patients were given a daily dose of 1,200mg of omega-3 fatty acids (extracted from fish oil). After two months, 59% had stopped taking their prescription medication for pain.

Previous research has identified that a class of fats - resolvins - play a key role in controlling inflammation in the body, stopping inflammatory cells from being switched on. As well as being found naturally in the body, resolvins are present in omega-3 fatty acids.'

Dec 3, 2009, BEE POLLEN & CHRONIC PELVIC PAIN SYNDROME

It has been reported in the European Neurology Journal that placebo-controlled trials have taken place using bee pollen extract to control pain from chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

This condition (cause unknown) is difficult to treat and there is no standard conventional treatment.

It was concluded that bee pollen helped to reduce the pain and that more research is needed into this.

Dec 2, 2009, PROBIOTICS

Tuesday's DAILY MAIL stated:

'PROBIOTICS - the good bacteria in the gut - are thought to help prevent illness. Prebiotics are important because they boost these good bacteria. They are found naturally in garlic, leeks, onions and artichokes.'

So, my recommendation is that we find our prebiotics through the suggested sources or, of course, Aloe Vera drinks - and try Forever's excellent probiotics!

Nov 24, 2009, FISH OILS - OMEGA 3

Today's DAILY MAIL states:

'Omega-3s have an anti-inflammatory effect and are linked to prevention of inflammatory conditions such as heart disease, arthritis and depression.

A major study found that omega-3 supplements could slow cognitive decline in patients with mild Alzheimer's. And based on new evidence the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) now recommends patients who've suffered a heart attack in the previous three months be prescribed fish oils.'

Could Forever's Aloe Vera Shampoo be better than Vidal Sassoon's?!

Are great for dandruff too!

Nov 11, 2009, GINKGO, GARLIC & PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE

Under the heading Is There An Alternative? yesterday's DAILY MAIL stated:

This condition affects 2.7 million Britons over 55. It occurs when arteries to the limbs are narrowed, restricting blood, causing pain and affecting mobility.

The paper went on:

These May Work:

GINKGO: Believed to increase blood-flow, studies have shown it reduces pain, increasing the distance sufferers are able to walk.

GARLIC: Contains allicin, which may help reduce cholesterol.

(Both these products are available from my Online Aloe Store!)

Nov 10, 2009, PROBIOTICS AREN'T A WASTE OF MONEY!

This title was taken from a headline on the Good Health pages of today's DAILY MAIL.

Glenn Gibson, Professor of Food Microbiology at Reading University, a leading authority on gut bacteria, went on to say:

"There's convincing evidence that the right products will do us good. Specifically 'a properly formulated probiotic drink or pills should benefit people who are travelling abroad and coming into contact with different bugs that might upset their system.'

He added that probiotics will also help anyone taking antibiotics, which kill good as well as bad bacteria, 'or people going into hospital where gut infections are rife.'
