ALOE VERA GEL
 What is Aloe Vera Gel? This was (more or less) my first question when my daughter, Joanna, introduced my Beardie, Sam, and me to the contents of a chubby yellow tub. So I'd like to pursue it with you and tell you my discoveries. The answer to the question depends on whether we’re referring to Forever Living’s Gel or that from some other manufacturer. I’ve now found that many manufacturers use the whole leaf manufacturing process, involving harvesting the whole plant rather than individual leaves. This is pulped and then filtered to remove unwanted elements such as the plant’s rind and sap – often called bitter aloes or aloin.
The final filtration to extract the aloin is through a carbon filter that’s extremely efficient. But it may also be extracting other unknown beneficial ingredients. Occasionally the whole leaf system is used to make tablets, resulting in still more interference with the natural ingredients.
It’s rather a special tub, incidentally, being recyclable and having three layers to protect the integrity and potency of its Aloe Vera Gel content. FLP use only inner gel – not the whole leaf – so they’ve no need to filter out the rind’s inedible ingredients. This leaves the natural balance of nutrients undisturbed. Their naturally Stabilized Gel has been declared ‘essentially identical’* to the raw gel. So drinking their hand-filleted Aloe Vera is like breaking open a leaf and scooping out the gel! The long chain polysaccharide in Aloe Vera acemanan is very delicate, so the manufacturing process should be as gentle as possible. Forever’s patented cold stabilization process, which doesn’t involve excessive filtration, concentration or excessive heat, leaves this sugar in the same state as when in the plant. The acemanan is not broken up by these processes, which often occur in the whole leaf extraction method. So the Aloe Vera Gel, if taken on an empty stomach, will not be exposed to the damaging effects of the stomach juices since it passes very quickly into the small bowel, where it’s absorbed unchanged – so having maximum effect on the immune system.
