ALOE VERA INNER LEAF

Bookmark and Share

Why would I devote a page to Aloe Vera inner leaf? Chiefly because you will probably have seen Aloe products in shops stating ‘whole leaf Aloe’!

The question I asked myself, back in the beginning, was whether whole leaf Aloe was better than just the inner Gel. I’d like to share my conclusions with you.

Basically, the Aloe leaf has four layers. These are:

  • Rind (a hard layer 15 cells thick)
  • Sap (high in anthraquinones – powerful laxatives)
  • Mucilage (acts as barrier, keeping the inner gel very sterile)
  • Gel (where the leaf stores all its 75 nutrients)
  • Let’s think carefully about this.

If there is pollution in the area, or if chemicals of any kind (herbicides, pesticides etc) have been used on the Aloe plants during the four years they take to reach maturity, which part of the leaf will these have reached?

The rind, it seems to me, certainly – and perhaps the sap to a lesser degree?

It is in the rind that the synthesis of all the plant’s nutrients occurs. The sap is the Aloe’s circulation system, moving materials up to the leaves and down to the roots, while the mucilage holds the plant together.

This layer is high in polysaccharides, including the immunomodulator, acemannan.

So ‘whole leaf Aloe’ uses all four layers, which are then filtered and often concentrated via a heat process.

Forever Living, however, who cultivate 80%+ of the world’s Aloe Vera free from herbicides, pesticides, pasteurisation, freeze drying or heat treatment, just use the inner leaf gel.

Their leaves are hand-filleted when freshly picked and put through a patented natural stabilisation process. This ensures that their gel and that of the fresh inner leaf are essentially identical.

What do Forever do with the rind?

    They use it as compost!
