Jul 15, MORE BENEFITS OF ROYAL JELLY

Under the heading STRESS: You Need B Vitamins, a recently health page in the DAILY MAIL stated:

'"Our brain needs B vitamins to make enzymes - the proteins that speed up our body's chemical reactions.

These are needed for all our bodily functions, but are especially concerned with concentration and improved cognitive ability", says Professor Kennedy.

"Researchers have found a clear link between taking vitamin B complexes and reduced stress, something that may also have an impact on long-term depression." Another stress-buster is magnesium.' (Found in Aloe Vera!)

'"This has a calming effect and is known as Nature's tranquilizer," says Dr Glenville. "It helps regulate levels of cortisol, the stress hormone."'

Jul 14, FISH OILS - YET AGAIN!

Under the heading OILY FISH AND MILK CUT DEMENTIA RISK yesterday's DAILY TELEGRAPH claimed on page 2:

'People with diets high in oily fish and milk are less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease, new research has indicated.

The antioxidant properties of vitamin E could fight the onset of the degenerative brain disorder by helping to protect the nervous system, a study in the ARCHIVES OF NEUROLOGY found.

In a separate study at the University of Exeter, adults with low levels of vitamin D were shown to be more likely to experience declines in thinking, learning and memory - and more likely to develop problems linked to Alzheimer's.

Good sources of vitamin E include eggs, milk and avocado. Vitamin D is found in oily fish such as salmon, sardines and tuna.'

Jul 13, FISH OILS - AGAIN!

There's been much in the press recently about the perceived power of fish oils. Here's an extract from today's DAILY MAIL:

'Last week scientists reported that women who take fish oil supplements reduce their risk of breast cancer by a third.

But while experts agree omega-3 pills can cut the risk of heart disease and are vital for brain development in the womb, opinion is divided over other benefits.

However, neuroscientists and nutritionists recently told a London conference that many Britons' health is at risk as they aren't getting enough omega-3 from fish.

"There's an epidemic of brain and mental disorders in the UK, such as ADHD, depression and cerebral palsy, which cost the Government 77 billion a year," says Professor Michael Crawford of the Institute of Brain Chemistry at London Metropolitan University.

"The evidence shows the lack of omega-3 from fish in our diet is a major factor."

Jul 12, VITAMIN C

On a recent DAILY MAIL health page, Dr Denning claimed:

'If you find you are bruising more easily than normal for no apparent reason, or that bruises are taking longer than usual to heal, you could have a deficiency in nutrients, primarily vitamin C.

This is essential for collagen formation, keeping our skin's tissue strong and helping wounds heal.

She adds: "Even minor dietary deficiencies of vitamin C can lead to increased bruising."

Jul 11, VITAMINS AND MINERALS

Under the general heading VITAMINS: NATURE'S SUPER CURE a recent DAILY MAIL health page stated:

'Most of us suffer from one of those annoying, minor health niggles at some point, little realising that a lack of vitamins or minerals may be to blame.

Although it's well known that some deficiencies can be dangerous - such as a severe lack of vitamin C causing scurvy - a slight lack in a vitamin or mineral can also have a noticeable impact on your health.

"Diet and poor nutrition are often overlooked by health practitioners despite being related to everyday health complaints," says Professor David Kennedy, psychobiologist at Northumbria University. "In some cases, minor ailments are not caused by a deficiency, but they can be helped by boosting your vitamin and mineral intake."

He points to new trials looking at the effect of multivitamins on healthy people. "We can already see there are improvements after just a month; this suggests their levels of certain vitamins may have been less than optimal to start with," he says.

Jul 10, MAGNESIUM IN ALOE VERA

Under the heading INSOMNIA last Tuesday's DAILY MAIL stated:

'You need: Magnesium

The mineral magnesium enhances the effect of tryptophan, an amino acid needed to help produce melatonin, the hormone involved in our sleeping and waking cycles.

"People who don't have enough magnesium in their system often have trouble sleeping," says Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, a sleep expert and author of Tired But Wired: How To Overcome Your Sleep Problems. "Try taking a supplement an hour before bed, or incorporate more magnesium into your diet."'

Jul 9, BENEFITS OF ROYAL JELLY

In the August issue of NATURAL HEALTH, Naturopath Louisa Roscoe gives this advice about getting rid of warts and stopping any more from occurring:

"Warts are caused by human papillomaviruses (HPV). There are at least 60 known types of HPV. Highly contagious, the virus that causes warts is acquired through breaks in the skin and will spread if they are picked or touched.

It is important to support the immune system, and supplements to consider include vitamin B complex, which is essential for normal cell multiplication and immune health.

Vitamin C has a very powerful anti-viral capacity and is good for preventing scarring - 4,000mg per day in divided doses is recommended."

Louisa goes on to say that the amino acid L-Cysteine supplies sulphur, which is needed for prevention and treatment of warts, while beta-carotene and vitamin A with mixed carotenoids are all needed for normalising skin and epithelial membranes. Zinc, she says, is also very important as it increases immunity against viruses.

She adds:

"You may want to try herbs like astragalus to help build up your immune system. Aloe Vera gelly has both anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, so try rubbing it onto the warts ... "

Jul 8, MAGNESIUM IN ALOE VERA

A DAILY MAIL health feature this week focused on muscle cramps being helped by magnesium. It said:

'This mineral is crucial for nerves transmitting messages to the muscles. But many of us are deficient. Our diets tend not to be very magnesium-rich because foods such as fast food, fizzy drinks, crisps, biscuits and refined grains are very low in magnesium.

In addition, many of us consume a lot of milk and dairy products and these and other calcium-rich foods can lower magnesium levels.

WHERE TO GET IT: Bran, wholegrain foods, dried fruit, sweetcorn, mushrooms and nuts are good sources. Ursula Arens, spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, recommends boosting your intake of these or taking a supplement.
Do not take with dairy products or calcium-rich foods, such as sardines.'

Jul 6, SUPPLEMENT FOR DRY SKIN

Here's an interesting little snippet from the health pages of today's DAILY MAIL:

'Vitamin A is so good for keeping skin supple that it is often added to skin creams.

This antioxidant fights the free radicals your body produces which damage cells: vitamin A also helps to form new skin cells.

For a cheaper, quicker solution, try taking it internally. Many multi-vitamins contain vitamin A, and other supplements, such as fish oil, are also high in vitamin A.'

Tuesday's DAILY MAIL, under the heading SPICE OF LIFE, claimed:

'Garlic helps to ward off upper respiratory infections (coughs and colds), possibly because the sulphur compounds it contains have natural antibiotic and anti-viral benefits.

Eating garlic may also reduce your risk of heart disease. Studies have shown reductions in total and LDL ('bad') cholesterol when garlic is consumed daily for four to 12 weeks. It may also help reduce blood pressure.'

Jun 30, FISH OILS & THE MENOPAUSE

Yesterday's DAILY MAIL stated:

'Eating fish may protect women from an early menopause.

Women who eat fish two or more times a week are less likely to suffer the characteristic symptoms early on.

Most women go through the menopause between the ages of 45 and 50, but it can occur anywhere between 40 and 55. Why it varies is not clear although genes, disease and infections may be a factor.

In the study, Turkish researchers discussed the lifelong health habits of 157 post-menopausal women, aged 45 to 60. While regularly eating fish delayed menopause, lifelong sun exposure increased the risk of it starting early. A history of heavy physical activity also doubled the risk, as did high blood pressure.

It's thought that fish, rich in protein and essential B vitamins, may have some kind of effect on the pituitary gland. This regulates hormones involved in the female cycle.'

Jun 29, ALOE VERA AND PSORIASIS

Today's DAILY MAIL states, on its health page:

'Aloe Vera may be better than some steroid creams for tackling mild to moderate psoriasis. It contains anti-inflammatory compounds called glycoproteins.'

The feature goes on to suggest breaking open an aloe leaf and applying the gel inside to the affected area.

But I have a better idea! Instead of mutilating your poor plant (if you possess one) why not try Aloe Propolis Creme and benefit from bee propolis - Nature's antibiotic - as well as aloe?

Jun 22, ASTHMA & NATURE-MIN SUPPLEMENT

The Health pages of today's DAILY MAIL state:

'Magnesium supplements may help to reduce asthma symptoms.

Trial results show that patients given oral supplements daily for six-and-a-half months had fewer problems and used less asthma medication.

Although previous studies have found a link between low levels of magnesium in the diet and more frequent and worse asthma attacks, there's been little research into taking supplements.

In the American study, 52 men and women with mild-to-moderate asthma were given 340mg of magnesium citrate or a placebo.

Those among the group taking the magnesium supplements had improved lung function; they also reported that their overall quality of life had improved.

It's thought low magnesium increases levels of histamine - which is released by the body's immune system and is responsible for asthma symptoms.'

Jun 1, NOT ENOUGH VITAMINS

Under the heading 'Too much alcohol and not enough vitamins' today's DAILY MAIL goes on to say how poor diet is putting women of all ages at risk.

Here are some extracts from their informative feature:

"Dr Ruxton, a freelance dietician, and Manchester Metropolitan University nutritionist Dr Emma Derbyshire combed medical literature for information about what women are eating and what this does to their health.

Writing in the journal Nutrition Bulletin, they said that more than half (52) of schoolgirls lack magnesium, an energy-boosting mineral found in green leafy vegetables, nuts, meat and in fish.

One in four are not getting enough zinc, 30 are lacking potassium, 16 are low in iodine and almost half fail to reach the recommended levels of iron.

The analysis found that 19 to 24-year-olds have 'particularly high' intakes of salt and alcohol - raising their odds of developing circulatory diseases and breast cancer.

The picture for the childbearing years is little better, with 20 still not getting enough iron - vital for the production of red blood cells - and 11 are low in vitamin B2, which helps keep skin and eyes healthy.

Up to 80 of women aged 19 to 50 do not get enough vitamin D needed to strengthen the bones of both mother and child.

Many mothers-to-be are lacking in fish oils - something that could raise their odds of post-natal depression.

Others are low in folic acid, which is key to the development of the unborn child's brain and spinal cord."

May 29, PROBIOTICS - COLDS & FLU

Here's more on probiotics from a recent issue of the DAILY MAIL:

'Probiotics can be of value in boosting a flagging immune system. Studies carried out on healthy people found that those who use probiotic supplements and probiotic foods have fewer colds and winter infections.

Probiotics can prime the immune system and increase resistance to infection by producing antibiotics.'

May 27, PROBIOTICS AND ALLERGIES

Tuesday's DAILY MAIL had this to say about probiotics and allergies:

'There is a link between bad gut bacteria and allergies. Studies are looking at whether probiotics might help asthma and allergy sufferers, by switching off an inflammatory response in the intestine.

Research shows people with allergies have lower levels of healthy gut flora. Probiotics can help reset that bacteria balance, providing a protective barrier in the gut.'

May 26, CHOOSING THE RIGHT PROBIOTIC

Yesterday's DAILY MAIL had this to say about probiotics:

"Most people think of probiotics as the little yoghurt 'shots', but good gut bacteria are available in different forms.

Plain live yoghurt contains just as many beneficial bacteria as a branded yoghurt 'shot'. Choose a good quality 'live' one. Either yoghurt or a shot should be taken every day.

Serious problems require bigger doses of probiotics and health stores sell probiotic supplements in tablet and powder form. Always buy the best quality (usually the most expensive) and keep it in the fridge to extend effectiveness.

Choose a product containing at least Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium. These are more likely to make it through the stomach.

There are many scientific studies to back up commonly used strains. Probiotics can reduce the side-effects of antibiotics, so start a course at the same time, but take them 3 hours apart. Swallow with cold water, never a hot drink."

May 25, FISH OILS & ASTHMA

'Fish oils' states today's DAILY MAIL 'could be a new treatment for asthma. In a trial, doctors are prescribing five high-dose fish oil capsules a day for three weeks to sufferers with mild symptoms.

It follows smaller studies that found fish oil supplements can help prevent coughing, constriction of the airways and wheezing.

If successful, the oil, which doesn't appear to have side-effects, could be an alternative to the standard treatment, inhaled steroids, or reduce the dose needed.

The fish oil treatment could be particularly helpful to long-term asthma users who can experience distressing side-effects from steroids, such as weight gain, increased bruising and hoarseness.

It's thought the benefits are down to the fatty acids (omega-3s) found in fish oils, which have an anti-inflammatory effect, say the researchers at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health in Canada.

Fish rich in omega-3 include salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring and sardines.'

May 5, SUNBURN ALOE VERA

Yesterday's DAILY MAIL contained a terrifying story about a lady doctor (Val Coupes) who now has just months to live because of skin cancer triggered by a single episode of childhood sunburn - 27 years ago, when she was 7.

In essence, she was with her family at a water park in Tenerife - where, despite using sun cream, she was sunburnt on her back, causing a 2in wide blister.

She still remembers the awful pain, for which her mother rushed her to the local pharmacist - who sold them an anaesthetic spray. This didn't help much and her back took weeks to heal.

She says: 'The problem with skin cancer is that though diagnosis can happen in adult life, it often relates to damage as a child. It just takes a long time to develop. And without doubt this was when my fate was sealed.'

At the end of the article this advice is given to protect our families:

In the spring and summer, apply sun protection cream every day.

Apply it 15 minutes before going outside; for children, just before you leave the house on the school run

Use a cream with an SPF of at least 15, or higher if you're fair-skinned.

Reapply every one to two hours - more often if in contact with water. Or try an extended-wear cream.

Use a golf-ball-sized dollop on arms, legs and face and rub it in so there are no streaks, but avoid over-rubbing.

Opt for cosmetics, such as lip balm or moisturiser, which have an SPF of 15.

We need vitamin D for strong bones and health: the main source is the sun. Half an hour of sun exposure, two to three times a week, to your face, arms, hands or back is enough.

The UV Index - the number that appears in a triangle on a weather map - reveals the strength of the sun's UV radiation. Ranging from one to 11+, the higher the number, the stronger the UV. If the reading is three, you'll need sun protection when you are outside.

When exposed to the sun, wear long-sleeved tops and trousers made from materials with a close weave. Wet clothing stretches and lets in more UV radiation.

My advice? Do as I do and use Aloe Sunscreen that is water resistant and SPF 30! Here's more about it:

Today's DAILY MAIL Good Health page states:

'Britain's 16 million hay fever sufferers face a difficult year thanks to the combination of the cold snap (which causes more tree pollen to form) and a warm spring (which brings the pollen season forwards).'

Apr 27, FIVE-A-DAY

Today's DAILY MAIL asks:

'Eating your five-a-day? Good for you. But are they the right five-a-day?

Researchers say we should ditch carrots and oranges and buy some sweet potatoes and papaya instead.

Our favorite fruits and vegetables are not necessarily the best for us, they claim.

Rather than making up our five-a-day with foods we know and like, we should broaden our tastes and stock up on kale and blueberries, as well as sweet potatoes and papaya.

Not only will our palates appreciate the variety, they are better for us than carrots, oranges and other favorites.

The researchers focused on phytonutrients - plant compounds believed to boost the health of the eyes, bone, heart, brain and immune system, cutting the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

They say that although carrots are rich in beta-carotene - a building block of flu-fighting vitamin A - sweet potatoes contain nearly twice as much. Similarly, while it's easy to start the day with a glass of orange juice, a handful of papaya contains 15 times more beta-cryptoxanthin - another vitamin A building block.

Dr Keith Randolph, of U.S. vitamin pill manufacturer Nutrilite, said that while it was well known that many people do not eat enough fruit and vegetables, even those who ate the recommended five-a-day could do better.

"This data highlights the importance of not only the quantity but the significant impact that quality and variety of the fruits and vegetables can have."

But Dr Emma Williams, of the British Nutrition Foundation, said: "No food is a superfood if it is not part of a healthy, varied and balanced diet."'
