My dog drinks aloe vera. Why? Because before he drank it Sam's eight-year-old limbs were stiff and he had started feeling like an old man. How do I know how he felt? Because he 'told' me by his behavior and by the fact that he had stopped bouncing around like only a Bearded Collie can bounce. I was so sad to see him experiencing problems when we went for our walks and when he tried to climb stairs. Where before he had run like the wind across the moors opposite our home, his fur spread out like a cloak, now the spring had gone from his paws and he ran more slowly, stiffness inhibiting him. Climbing stairs was even worse, so he sometimes settled himself downstairs at night rather than risk the hazards inherent in reaching the landing outside my bedroom (his usual night-time 'roost'). This wasn't like Sam, who was usually a big risk-taker. So we went to the vet, who diagnosed arthritis and beyond that wasn't too helpful. Then my daughter arrived for a visit, clutching a yellow tub with a brown lid. What was in it?

"Aloe vera!" she told me triumphantly. "Isn't that what you drink for your IBS?" I asked, curious as to why she was waving it at me. "Yes, but aloe's anti-inflammatory properties might also help Sam's stiffness," she said with astonishing confidence (which I didn't share, I might add)! Knowing how finicky Sam was, I wasn't even confident that I could get him to drink the stuff. But Joanna said that pouring it over his food would do the trick - and to my astonishment it did. Sam actually lapped the aloe up, along with his tripe and veggies - and sure enough, within just a couple of weeks, there was enough of a change in him for me to think it worth persevering with the drink. So we did - and the rest, as they say, is history! Not only did Sam benefit enormously, but so did many of his friends - a Rottweiler, cat and rabbit were among the first whose humans asked me for some of 'Sam's drink'. All unintentionally, I was in business! What a good thing it is that this dog drinks aloe!
