DOG SKIN PROBLEMS

Dog skin problems can cause almost as much distress to the owner as to the dog - perhaps more, in some cases!
Fox mange, for example, is transmissible to humans and cats - while moist eczema can be so itchy and painful that the animal will often attack the area, causing further damage and further irritation. Then there are Canine Scabies, Canine Acne, the potentially serious Cellulitis (requiring veterinary attention, although Aloe Vera can be used in conjunction with drugs from the vet), Mites and various forms of Dermatitis, among other conditions. Cleansing products that can help dog skin problems:
So where does Aloe Vera come in with these dog skin problems? Firstly, it is a natural product with no detectable side effects and can usually be used alongside any necessary veterinary procedures. Often, it can help make savings on vet bills!

Eminent veterinary surgeon David Urch BSc, MA,VetMB, MRCVS tells us that the treatment of many different skin conditions using Aloe Vera preparations varies very little. He recommends: Always removing the cause - killing infestations of external parasites or protecting from allergic triggers. Washing the area with diluted Aloe Vera soap or Aloe Vera shampoo. Drying well - and not over-washing. Clipping away the fur in hairy areas, so that the affected area is exposed. Spraying with Aloe Vera spray solution. Gently applying Aloe Vera gelly. Using Propolis Creme instead of the Gelly if the area is especially dry or infected. These products are recommended for dog skin problems (and also for feline skin problems):

Applying topical treatment with Aloe Vera spray, gelly or propolis creme 4-6 times daily initially, then twice a day once signs of improvement are noticeable. Adding Aloe Vera Gel to the diet can be beneficial, especially if the animal is debilitated or suffering from a compromised immunological response. Give the dog 60mls initially, halving this 'treatment' dose as the symptoms resolve and then reducing to 15mls for long-term maintenance.

"Healing crisis". David Urch tells us: 'Do not be over concerned if the symptoms of skin irritation appear to get worse initially. This occurs because Aloe Vera increases the rate of healing of the skin, concentrating the healing period into a shorter time. The healing crisis may last 5-10 days. Continue with the oral gel during this time and hold back temporarily with the topical preparations. If this period persists ensure the diagnosis is re-confirmed by a veterinary surgeon. It is crucial ALWAYS to seek veterinary advice if you are in any doubt, or if the condition does not show signs of improvement within a few days. Some conditions require IMMEDIATE veterinary assistance.' I hope you will have found this basic guide helpful with your canine skin problems!
In conclusion, (for all animal problems and a whole cornucopia of highly skilled veterinary advice!) I cannot recommend too highly David Urch's wonderful book ALOE VERA NATURE'S GIFT. Here you can find out everything you could possibly need to know about aloe and animals from the expert himself! I regard its 238 pages as an absolute bible of animal and aloe care.
