DOG TRAINING BOOK REVIEW
Sit Stay Fetch
Here is the Dog Training Book Review I promised you. I think you will love the simple, straightforward style of SitStayFetch – and the quality of the advice it gives on dog-training and ownership.
Whether you are new to dogs, perhaps contemplating bringing a puppy into your home for the first time, or a more experienced owner, I guarantee that there’s plenty here to interest and educate you. Daniel Stevens has written 272 pages from the perspective of someone who not only loves dogs, but also truly understands them. It is as if he has seen inside their heads and so can write with “doggy sense”. This enables the reader to see some of what he sees and approach dog-training with an understanding that could only otherwise come after years and years of trial and error – if ever it were to come at all! SitStayFetch deals initially with dog ownership in general, including the selection process and advice about where to adopt from. It discusses breed groups and responsible ownership and the all-important BRINGING YOUR PUPPY OR DOG HOME and caring for him. There’s a very helpful section on specific dog-training methods and I especially loved all the items under the heading SECRETS TO UNDERSTANDING YOUR DOG. I learned, for example, that a dog’s sense of smell is thought by some scientists to be possibly as high as one hundred million times better than a human’s! But our eyesight is generally superior to theirs. Well, we need to have some superiority, don’t we? Each section outlines at the beginning what it sets out to do – and then at the end reviews the main points covered. This presentation style makes it easy for readers to go straight to where they need to be, so avoiding the frustrations inherent in some books. Daniel writes with plenty of humour, too. I liked ‘In general dog whispering requires that you in some way become a student of dog behaviour and dog psychology. But it stops short of suggesting that you should try and wag your tail to get your point across.’ Other main Headings are: COMMON BEHAVIOUR PROBLEMS SOLVED COMMANDS TO START DOG WHISPERING UNCOVERED HEALTH-RELATED PROBLEMS SOLVED ADVANCED COMMANDS & TRICKS In short, as claimed in its Introduction: ‘SitStayFetch is a complete A-Z of handbook for dog owners’.
I think it’s excellent and really recommend it!
