FISH OILS

Bookmark and Share

Do you have bad memories of fish oils? How well I remember the daily dose of cod liver oil that my mother insisted on spooning into me! And then I did just the same for my children before they set off for school! (Scroll to the end for answers to the question IS FISH OIL THE ELIXIR OF LIFE?)

What we didn’t know, back then, was that cod liver oil – although beneficial - was not necessarily the best preventative.

Think about it! The cod isn’t an oily fish and its liver is where all its toxins are stored. Added to which a lot of cod comes to us from the North Sea – a somewhat polluted environment!

Compare that with Forever’s Arctic-Sea Super Omega-3 which is produced from oily fish whose natural habitat is one of the least polluted oceans in the world!

Here are some of its key benefits:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids play a part in reducing heart disease
  • Omega-3 and Omega-9 fatty acids have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels
  • May help with effects of arthritis, blood pressure (important in pregnancy), and skin disorders
  • Widely recommended for learning difficulties and behavioural problems in children
  • P.S. Oh – and how I appreciate being able to take these in the form of softgel capsules, instead of on a desert-spoon!

    ALOE VARICOSE VEINS

It may be a purely personal thing, but since I started taking Arctic Sea Omega 3 (2 capsules 3 times daily) alongside my usual dose of aloe vera, there's been a dramatic change in my varicose veins - which have virtually vanished!

    STOP PRESS!!!

Recent research published in the United States Journal of Clinical Cancer Research from a study at the University of California in San Francisco shows that the incidence of prostate cancer has increased by about 25% over the last 5 years.

As mentioned in my Aloe Blog, in the UK around 35,000 men are diagnosed with this disease each year and 10,000 die of it.

The research taken from comparisons between 400 men diagnosed with the cancer and 500 healthy men has shown that men who ate oily fish with omega 3 fatty acids between 1 and 3 times a month ran a 36% lower risk than those who didn't.

AND those who ate this fish once a week or more decreased the risk by a staggering 57%!

For men over 40 who don't eat 'enough' fish but wish to decrease their risk factor, it is recommended by Dr Peter Atherton, the highly respected doctor on Forever Living's Advisory Board, that as well as taking selenium they take 2 of Forever's Arctic Sea Super Omega-3 fish oils capsules 3 times daily with food.

ARE FISH OILS THE ELIXIR OF LIFE?

Jenny Hope, Medical Correspondent on the DAILY MAIL, wrote on 20 January 2010:

'Fish oils may hold the key to longer and healthier life, claim researchers.

They say omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils may have a direct effect on extending the lifespan of cells.

Their study is the first to link the oils - either from fish or supplements - with the body's ability to resist premature ageing.

The 'elixir of life' discovery was made in heart disease patients, who are already advised to increase their fish intake to ward off repeat heart attacks.

Scientists from the University of California, San Francisco, looked at the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on 608 outpatients with heart disease.

They found higher levels of omega-3 slowed down damage to DNA contained in telomeres - tiny 'caps' on the ends of chromosomes which help protect against inflammation and other ageing processes.

Having longer telomeres is a sign of being biologically younger and also of being healthier. As people age, their telomeres get shorter and they become more susceptible to certain illnesses. Scientists believe this process is at the heart of many age-related diseases, and may even place a final limit on human lifespan.

Nutritionist Dr Carrie Ruxton, speaking on behalf of the Health Supplements Information Service, said: "If this link between high omega-3 fatty acid levels and reduced ageing is confirmed in other studies, this has important implications for intakes of omega-3 fatty acids."

At the start of the study, measurements were taken of the length of telomeres in the patients' white blood cells. The tests were carried out again after five years, and showed a clear link with omega-3 intake, says a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Patients consuming the least omega-3 had the fastest rate of telomere shortening while those in the top 25% of consumption levels had the slowest rate.

Lead researcher Dr Ramin Farzaneh-Far said animal research has shown that rodents live a third longer when given a diet enriched with fish-derived omega-3.

He said the latest study demonstrated 'a potentially novel pathway for the anti-ageing effects of omega-3 fatty acids.'

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in oily fish such as mackerel, herring, salmon, sardines or trout - and fish oils supplements - as well as soya beans, rapeseed oil, flaxseed, pumpkin seeds and walnuts.

White fish is also a healthy food although it contains lower levels of essential fatty acids.

But, said Dr Ruxton, Britons fail to consume recommended minimum levels of two fish portions each week, one of which must be oily.'
