PROBIOTICS

what are probiotics

(A click on the picture or the lower link will take you from Probiotics to My On-Line Aloe Store)

Are you a probiotics fan? If you are (and I certainly am!) does your enthusiasm extend just to yoghurts, or have you tried probiotic drinks and supplements?

If the drinks are your ‘thing’, beware of the fact that some of them are positively brimful with sugar! Anything over 10g per 100g is somewhat high, especially if you’re on a diet or are diabetic. A pill would be a better option.

According to a recent GOOD HEALTH feature in the DAILY MAIL new research shows that these ‘good’ bacteria could actually act as effective medicines, as well as helping with weight-control.

This prompted me to jot down a few thoughts about the probiotic I use for my general health and well being and to help keep my digestive system healthy.

Importantly, it contains both bifidobacteria and lactobacilli which, while not playing vastly different roles, give a better bacterial ‘hit’ when taken together.

And the Aloe I drink daily acts as a ‘prebiotic’, helping pre-existing healthy gut flora to flourish.

Great to have this added benefit (although anyone prone to bloating or diarrhoea would be best advised to consult a professional before taking these two products together).

Another useful prebiotic is Garlic-Thyme. I take this plus a probiotic whenever travelling abroad, to reduce the incidence of travellers' diarrhoea.

It can also be beneficial to take probiotics during a course of antibiotics!

Why do I take a probiotic daily? Well, they help to keep me ‘regular’ and my own personal experience is that my weight has remained more stable with less effort.

Perhaps this is partly due to the fact that the dose I take contains six important strains of beneficial bacteria in a shelf stable beadlet encapsulating 1 billion organisms of:

  • lactobacillus acidophilus
  • lactobacillus rhamnosus
  • lactobacillus bulgaricus
  • lactobacillus plantarum
  • bifidobacterium longum
  • and

  • bifidobacterium lactis
  • for release in the large intestine. This, I think you will agree, somewhat exceeds the ‘at least 10 million’ live micro-organisms recommended!

The bottom line is that I feel better for taking it! This is my one of choice (an added 'plus' being that it's the only one I know of on the market needing no refrigeration):

Forever Active Probiotic: Promotes a healthy digestive system with a unique combination of six shelf-stable beneficial strains of microbes. An easy-to-swallow beadlet that enhances nutrient absorption and immune function. (30 beadlets)
